Course Reflection

Image
Going into this class I did not know what to expect. I knew we would talk about St. Augustine and that was where my historical knowledge of Florida ended. Florida is much more than St. Augustine and sun. We have many important historical events and experiences. Florida was an important military base during WW11 and even had its own minute of fame with film making. We are a huge tourist spot and gave been visited by many for our natural and now many man made attractions. When I used to think of Florida I thought of it alone but now I see the bigger picture of Florida and it's part in American history.     We had many great resources to learn about Florida in this class. My favorite was the podcasts. I liked being able to hear about small chunks of Floridas history and taking Cornell notes helped to retain the information. A Land Remembered was a really great book and not only gave a realistic perspective on a time in Florida but also was a really great story...

Historic Site Trip 2

Image
For my second historic site I was planning on going to Castillo de San Marcos. I was planning on going on Thursday but ironically, living in Florida had me bunkered down and stuck inside for hurricane Nicole. Luckily all was well after the hurricane but I was not able to make it to the Fort. St. Augustine is one of my favorite places and I have been to the fort pretty recently and decided that I would speak on that experience until I can visit the site next week and update this post with my new findings!  On my most recent visit to the port I went with my mother. It was close to my birthday and since St. Augustine is a favorite place of mine we went to the fort together. We spent the whole day in St. Augustine but probably about an hour at the fort. As always it was a great experience. Since I went recently and it was for my own enjoyment and not education driven like my trip next week I am interested to compare what I notice from my past trip to the one next week! Since I ha...

Chapter 15 Worksheet

.Who is the author of this chapter and what information can you find about the author elsewhere in the text? The author is Jerrell H. Shofner. He wrote a book called Nor is it Over Yet about the period of Reconstruction.  .According to this chapter, list 2 things that were in desperate need of 'reconstruction'.  According to this chapter, Jerrell H. Schofner discusses how the government and the economy needed reconstruction. (Gannon, 2018). In the History of Florida. .Florida stands apart from other areas in the way that General newton handled two main areas: Politics and freedman. Discuss both. In The History of Florida  Jerrell H. Schofner states " General John Newton instructed Florida planters to assemble their former slaves, explain that they were now free, and ask them to remain on the plantations and work for wages. Compensation was to be paid in shares of the harvest." (Gannon,2018). the Freedman's Bureau agents were sent out to make sure it was being supe...

A land Remembered

Image
For my post this week I have decided to focus on Tobias. He is an interesting character. With the hardships, he and his family go through. For example, living in Florida's harsh environment, a lack of food, lack of supplies. He has a lot of strong character traits that I would like to Highlight. He is a hard worker, a kind man to natives and his family, and stays strong and positive for him his family. All in all, he is an example of a man who, despite his harsh surroundings has stayed true to himself as well as stayed strong for himself and his family. Due to the conditions of his life, he could have turned into a very different man and people would not have blamed him for it. Though he is a fictional character he is a great symbol of what people settling in Florida went through and how they used their surroundings and hard work to become successful. Chapter 10 Worksheet

(1). Who are the authors? Susan Richbourg Parker and William s. Coker. (5). Identify and discuss the issue of "perspective" with regard to Anglo writings of Spanish government. The perspective was disarrayed due to the personal opinions of the English on how they viewed the Spanish people. They enhanced their time when they were in control while making the Spanish period seem less important. They highlighted the bad and misjudgments of the Spanish period instead of having a more open and complete approach. This blurs what was the truth through their perspective (Gannon et al., 2018, p. 162-163).  (2). How did Spain cede one territory and receive two back twenty years later? There were many rebellions and revolts and tho America tried to create a treaty so that they could keep the territory it failed. Th spanish were able to take back St. Agustine and Texas back (Gannon et al., 2018, p.175-176). (5). Describe 2 territories, there locations, capitals, and industries, & re...
