Historic Site Trip 2

For my second historic site I was planning on going to Castillo de San Marcos. I was planning on going on Thursday but ironically, living in Florida had me bunkered down and stuck inside for hurricane Nicole. Luckily all was well after the hurricane but I was not able to make it to the Fort. St. Augustine is one of my favorite places and I have been to the fort pretty recently and decided that I would speak on that experience until I can visit the site next week and update this post with my new findings!

On my most recent visit to the port I went with my mother. It was close to my birthday and since St. Augustine is a favorite place of mine we went to the fort together. We spent the whole day in St. Augustine but probably about an hour at the fort. As always it was a great experience. Since I went recently and it was for my own enjoyment and not education driven like my trip next week I am interested to compare what I notice from my past trip to the one next week! Since I have more information on Florida I think it give the fort deeper meaning than before.

Here are the pictures from my most recent trip! (I will update with new pictures next week as well)!

I will never get tired of visiting this historic site it has such as rich history connected to Florida that is so important. "Built over 340 years ago, from coquina, a light and porous shell-stone rock, Castillo de San Marcos National monument symbolizes the clash between cultures which ultimately which resulted in our uniquely unified nation.' ( Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, n.d.). This fort ties in to what we have learned in class a lot. We have talked about how the Spanish explorers came and built forts and created homes here. This is one of the very forts that was built and used by the Spanish. It lets us see a part of History that we learned in a text book come to life. I believe that is the best time of education for history you can get and I am luck to live so close that I can visit and re-live history so close to home!

  1. Happy almost Birthday Riley! I am glad to see you enjoyed your trip to the Castilla de San Marcos. It is also one of my favorite Florida destinations and it never gets old. We are so lucky we only live like an hour away from it too. Love the pictures and the informative caption at the bottom of the blog on the stone that the fort is made out of.
