Course Reflection

Going into this class I did not know what to expect. I knew we would talk about St. Augustine and that was where my historical knowledge of Florida ended. Florida is much more than St. Augustine and sun. We have many important historical events and experiences. Florida was an important military base during WW11 and even had its own minute of fame with film making. We are a huge tourist spot and gave been visited by many for our natural and now many man made attractions. When I used to think of Florida I thought of it alone but now I see the bigger picture of Florida and it's part in American history.

We had many great resources to learn about Florida in this class. My favorite was the podcasts. I liked being able to hear about small chunks of Floridas history and taking Cornell notes helped to retain the information. A Land Remembered was a really great book and not only gave a realistic perspective on a time in Florida but also was a really great story which made it so much better to read. The text book had good information but was probably my least favorite source compared to the other two. All of these did help a lot with out research for assignments. I feel like I could get different and new information from each source on the same topic. It gave a wide perspective of Florida that gave me a well-rounded knowledge.

Learning about the unique people who were apart of Florida was really interesting. The Calusa were one of the first people we learned about and I found them so engaging based on how well they adapted to Florida and were able to use its natural resources. The cracker Cowboys were also another group that I though were very interesting and we got to learn about them in a traditional way plus read a more personal perspective from the novel. Inn terms race and gender seem Florida had just as many trials and tribulations in our history. We were on the confederate side for the Civil war and woman and people of different races had to fight for freedoms that should have been naturally given. I feel this is in most places in America and many places all over the world have this in there history.

All in all this class was a great learning experience. It expanded, not only my knowledge but skills I use in every class, like citing, and my research skills. I think I have a fresh perspective of Florida's history how how we have become the state we are now. I'm really happy that I was able to dive in to this class and learn so much about my state. I hope to take my new knowledge with me in not only school setting but life as well. I am so glad i went the blog route and have this forever so that I can always look back at my time in this class.

On that note here is me at one of my favorite places in Florida! Thanks for a great class!!
