Introducing Me

 Hello! My name is Riley Gutzke. I am so excited to be starting this blogging journey. I am a big history fan and a native Florida girl so I'm excited to have the chance to put both together on this blog. 

Here are a few fun facts about me:

. I work as a party princess in Jacksonville and absolutely love it!

. I am a huge Disney fan and have a big collection of Minnie Mouse ears to prove it!

. Reading at the beach is one of my favorite things to do.

. I was born in Gainsville and raised in Jacksonville my whole life.

. I am planning on studying Early Childhood education to become an elementary teacher.

I have never had a blog before but am so ready to jump into this class and learn about Florida. I can't wait to see the end result at the end of the semester.

Historical Florida Site Visit

I decided to visit Walter Jones Historical park in Mandarin for my site visit. I went with my sister and niece on Thursday the 6th in the afternoon. We spent about an hour here. I used to live in mandarin so I would come here a lot. The park has many buildings, trees, and a dock out to the St.Johns River. This is the house of Major William Wirt Webb. He was a united states officer during the civil war. He also served as postmaster from 1906 to 1964 with his daughter Agnes (Mandarin Museum Historical Society, n.d.). Here are a few more pictures of me and my family enjoying the park. I think it's interesting how I had been to this park many times but had never looked into its history of it and its importance to Florida. Like many things, I am learning in this class. The Calusas, cracker cowboys, and now this park has been added to my knowledge of Florida history and I am happy to be able to broaden my knowledge of Florida through this class. They all come together in interesting ways...

Historic Site Trip 2

 For my second historic site I was planning on going to Castillo de San Marcos. I was planning on going on Thursday but ironically, living in Florida had me bunkered down and stuck inside for hurricane Nicole. Luckily all was well after the hurricane but I was not able to make it to the Fort. St. Augustine is one of my favorite places and I have been to the fort pretty recently and decided that I would speak on that experience until I can visit the site next week and update this post with my new findings!  On my most recent visit to the port I went with my mother. It was close to my birthday and since St. Augustine is a favorite place of mine we went to the fort together. We spent the whole day in St. Augustine but probably about an hour at the fort. As always it was a great experience.
