A Land Remembered
For my blog post this week I have decided to talk about the novel we are reading in class. This book is called A Land Remembered and is a historical fiction about a family and its hardships in early Florida. It goes through three generations of this family and shows how they became successful in Florida and how many things have changed since Florida was first settled. It was interesting reading about the family's struggles in Florida with living off the land and surviving. "The first two years in Florida had been a time of near starvation" (Smith, 2011 p.17). They had trouble figuring out the land and animals and how to use them best to survive. Comparing to the podcast about the Calusa Florida Natives and how they lived off the land. They seemed to thrive very easily while MacIvey's struggled after years of living there. Why was this? Was it because American life had certain constraints and rules you followed while in native tribes they were able to build their society and way of life from scratch? I think this may be a part of it. Native Floridians were able to find how to best survive in Florida and build their society around that. People like the MacIvey's already had learned a way of life that they were used to following that and were trying to apply that to a new place with new surroundings, animals, and land. I think it's important to see the different people who have lived in Florida and how they were able to survive. It is also important to notice the differences between how the natives and how the early settlers lived differently in Florida and how that affected their way of life. I have enjoyed being able to look into different media showcasing different early Floridians and how they began their lives in Florida. It gives different perspectives and I think that's important.
