A Land Remembered

 For my blog post this week I have decided to talk about the novel we are reading in class. This book is called A Land Remembered and is a historical fiction about a family and its hardships in early Florida. It goes through three generations of this family and shows how they became successful in Florida and how many things have changed since Florida was first settled. It was interesting reading about the family's struggles in Florida with living off the land and surviving. "The first two years in Florida had been a time of near starvation" (Smith, 2011 p.17). They had trouble figuring out the land and animals and how to use them best to survive. Comparing to the podcast about the Calusa Florida Natives and how they lived off the land. They seemed to thrive very easily while MacIvey's struggled after years of living there. Why was this?   Hello! My name is Riley Gutzke. I am so excited to be starting this blogging journey. I am a big history fan and a native Florida girl so I'm excited to have the chance to put both together on this blog.  Here are a few fun facts about me: . I work as a party princess in Jacksonville and absolutely love it! . I am a huge Disney fan and have a big collection of Minnie Mouse ears to prove it! . Reading at the beach is one of my favorite things to do. . I was born in Gainsville and raised in Jacksonville my whole life. . I am planning on studying Early Childhood education to become an elementary teacher. I have never had a blog before but am so ready to jump into this class and learn about Florida.
